C05: Nonlinear optical surfaces based on ZnO-Plasmonic hybrid-nanostructures

What is the challenge of my research project? Why am I eager to do it?
The project objectives require understanding of the fundamental mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear optical effects observed for plasmonic nanostructures in the resonant and off- resonant regimes. Having an adequate theoretical model is critical for efficient tailoring of optical components with enhanced nonlinearities. With this purpose I do time-domain numerical simulations of short pulse interaction with metallic nanostructures of different geometries assuming hydrodynamic nature of the free electron gas confined in the volume of target objects. This is challenging because such an approach requires very high spatial resolution on the surface of the metal. At the same time the size of the entire system may reach thousands on nanometers.  Thus, the problem becomes multi-scale and one has to apply efficient numerical methods and high-performance computing (HPC).

Why did I choose this project?
I am enthusiastic about numerical modelling and HPC and this project is a great opportunity to apply my knowledge in such a prospective field.
