C04: Ultrafast electric control of optical polarizations and transitions

What is the challenge of my research project? Why am I eager to do it?
The goal of the Project C04 is the development of photonic devices with nonlinear functionalities that can be controlled by electric means. By using ultrafast electronic circuits and low-capacity quantum dot photodiodes we examine the interaction between ps-electric pulses and ps-laser pulses in quantum dots. Here we will attain coherent optoelectronic control over the transitions in a quantum dot.

Why did I choose this project?
At the start of the first founding period I started working as a master student in the technological development of the quantum dot photodiodes. The development and characterization of these photodiodes were a main part of my master thesis. I am excited for the chance to work now in this project as a PhD student on the way to open fundamentally new perspectives for nonlinear optoelectronic devices which are based on coherent electric control.

Especially challenging and fascinating is the development of the semiconductor technology for the fabrication of the low capacity quantum dot photodiodes as well as the development of an ultrafast electric circuit. In the end these developments allow us to perform new interesting experiments.
